Fort Augustus relies heavily on the tourist trade and the passing traffic along the Caledonian Canal. The canal has a series of stepped locks down to where it joins the south west end of Loch Ness. The 30m wide canal was built starting in 1804 and connects the North Sea with the Irish Sea.
